DECREASE OF TOTAL SERUM BILIRUBIN LEVEL IN NEWBORN INFANTS AFTER PHENOMARNITONE TREATMENT

Abstract
The serum bilirubin level of 220 newborn babies on 2nd or 3rd day of life, who were delivered at the Obstetric Ward of the Naticnal Medical Center, were checked and the effects of phenobarbitone on neonatal jaundice were investigated.
Total 217 newborn babies were included in this study and they were divided in following 3 major groups:
1. Control group consisting 118 babies.
2. Mother only phenobarbitone group consisting 24 babies...administration of phenobarbitone 50~100 mg per os to the pregnant women only for 1 or 2 days before delivery, and serum bilirubin levels in their offspring were checked.
3. Baby only phenobarbitone group consisting 75 babies...administration of phenobarbitone 3 mg/kg/day intramuscularly, divided in two, to the new-born babies only and their serum bilirubin levels were checked.
The results were analysed statistically and the conclusion reached the newborn babies treated with-phenobarbitone were the most effective to decrease serum bilirubin level.
